Avulux vs. FL-41 and other light sensitivity lenses
FL-41 and most tints are broad filters — they knock down a wide swath of the spectrum more or less evenly, which is why they read as a rose or amber wash. Avulux is a patented multi-band notch filter: it drops hard at the specific wavelengths shown to trigger and worsen migraine and leaves the rest of the spectrum alone.
Deep notches at 480 nm and 590 nm
Avulux (teal) falls to near zero at the high-blue and red/amber bands implicated in migraine. FL-41 (pink) never dips below roughly 45% anywhere in that range — it dims those wavelengths, but doesn't remove them.
Green light stays open
Between the notches Avulux climbs back up, passing the soothing green band. That's what keeps color perception usable and makes the lens wearable at a desk all day rather than only during an attack.
Precision, not a tint recipe
"FL-41" is a color family, and it varies widely lab to lab. Avulux is a patented, manufactured filter with a fixed curve — every pair performs the same. That consistency is a large part of what the FDA reviewed.
An FDA-recognized classification of its own
De Novo authorization (August 2026) is reserved for first-of-their-kind devices with no existing equivalent. It covers episodic migraine patients 12 and older and is backed by randomized controlled trials plus 50,000+ wearers. No FL-41 lens carries anything comparable. Read the announcement.
